James's Story

Being an Owner means being a part of a team that is like family.

"The best part of my job is seeing the clients smiling and happy knowing they have really good staff taking care of them.”

Life was difficult for James after he moved to Wisconsin in 2017. He found himself homeless and living in his car. He was eager to find a job but wasn’t quite sure where to begin. By chance, he discovered Homes for Independent Living (HIL), A MyPath Company. What a great day that was for both James and HIL! He walked into the HIL Oshkosh office, interviewed for a Direct Support Professional position and the rest is history. At the time he knew nothing about the company, but he has grown to love it and finds it a great place to work. James wishes people knew, “how good and fun the company is and how caring and understanding they are of staff and clients.”

James spends his days making homemade meals for the clients, listening to music, playing a game of checkers or catch, painting or just talking about the day. He says the best part of his job is “seeing the clients smiling and happy knowing they have really good staff taking care of them.” James is willing to step in and help wherever he is needed. He does a great job of helping new Owners learn their positions and feel more comfortable in the program. His calm demeanor is also comforting for the clients that he supports.

To James, being an Owner at HIL means “being a part of a team that is like family.” He also feels that it’s important for people to know that you can grow at MyPath. A lot of other companies will keep employees in one position, but with MyPath there’s always room to grow and opportunities for different positions. James knew he had found the right place when he was welcomed with open arms and made to feel he was part of the team immediately. My Path has made a difference in James’s life. He has a deeper passion for helping those in need. “MyPath is the reason why I help out everyone in need – both inside and outside of the company.”

We are so thankful that James walked through those doors six years ago. He is a great addition to HIL and look forward to his growth within the company.

Working at a MyPath Company

Our employees are why MyPath companies work so well for the people we serve. They’re the reason we’re 100% employee-owned and have nine MyPath companies and 150 locations throughout Wisconsin and Indiana. To help take care of the future of our people, employees who are with us for a year, with over 1000 hours of work, begin to receive company-funded MyPath stock shares. After that first year, continued employment with us means continued growth in the number of company shares you receive.

This culture of ownership goes beyond stock. As an employee owner, you can expect transparency, respect and appreciation. If you are called to help others and be part of something bigger, MyPath can help you explore opportunities throughout its many organizations.
