Lisa's Story

Lisa shared that early on in her employment she knew she had found a career she loved. Seeing the smiles on her client’s faces when they were able to accomplish a goal or learn a new task is the best part of her job.

Lisa says her position at HIL and her clients have taught her to grow as a person and learn patience. She has found her place at MyPath.

Lisa Smith has been an employee-owner at Homes for Independent Living (HIL) - Shade Tree, a MyPath Company, for the last three years. Lisa’s spirit, kindness, compassion, and client focused care has been at the forefront of her career, and she is consistently demonstrating her passion and dedication to not only the clients of Shade Tree but many other programs as well.

Lisa shared that early on in her employment she knew she had found a career she loved. Seeing the smiles on her client’s faces when they were able to accomplish a goal or learn a new task is the best part of her job. The clients that Lisa cares for look forward to the warm shoulder and listening ear Lisa provides during her shifts.

Prior to her position at HIL, Lisa worked in a factory however, due to an injury she had to have surgery. She was eventually laid off, but as she reflected on her situation, she realized that factory work was a physically demanding job with no real rewards. Knowing she needed a change, Lisa came across an ad on Facebook for Homes for Independent Living, so she applied even though she didn’t know much about the company–and the rest is history! Lisa says that her duties at HIL are much like her duties at home except she loves that working with her clients often feels more like gaining family than working. She states her position at HIL and her clients have taught her to grow as a person and learn patience. Lisa has found her place at MyPath.

Lisa’s advice for anyone considering becoming an employee-owner is to experience it for yourself. Don't let the opinions of others effect your decision and you just might fall into a career you love! In fact, Lisa has been successful in recruiting her daughter to become an employee-owner as well!

Working at a MyPath Company

Our employees are why MyPath companies work so well for the people we serve. They’re the reason we’re 100% employee-owned and have nine MyPath companies and 150 locations throughout Wisconsin and Indiana. To help take care of the future of our people, employees who are with us for a year, with over 1000 hours of work, begin to receive company-funded MyPath stock shares. After that first year, continued employment with us means continued growth in the number of company shares you receive.

This culture of ownership goes beyond stock. As an employee owner, you can expect transparency, respect and appreciation. If you are called to help others and be part of something bigger, MyPath can help you explore opportunities throughout its many organizations.
