Stephanie B.'s Story

Stephanie B. says, "Coming to Homes for Independent Living (HIL) was one of the best decisions of my adult life. The job challenges me, and even when things get tough, we work through it together. I had been looking for a job like this—it feels amazing, comfortable, and safe.”

"This role comes with more responsibility, but I love a challenge. I’m proud of myself, my kids are proud of me, and I know I’m making a difference every single day."

When Stephanie joined Homes for Independent Living (HIL), a MyPath Company, as a Direct Support Supervisor in January 2025, she didn’t know exactly what to expect. However, she knew she was ready for a change. Although she loved the work she was doing, she could no longer find joy in her previous environment.

With a lifelong passion for helping others, Stephanie has always taken pride in supporting those in need. What she was missing was a place where she could grow while continuing that mission—and she says she found that at HIL. “I knew I was in the right place,” Stephanie shares, “when I asked for help and support and received it right away. I didn’t have that before.”

For Stephanie, the role of a Direct Support Supervisor (DSS) has far exceeded her expectations. “Being a DSS requires many things,” she says, “but each one is necessary for the clients’ success and for helping staff keep things running smoothly.”

When asked what a typical day looks like, she shares, “I start each day by greeting the clients—it sets the tone for the entire day!” Stephanie loves that she gets to make a meaningful impact on her clients’ lives while continuing to grow professionally. She’s learned new skills such as creating activity plans, developing menus, and handling documentation.

She credits much of her personal growth directly to the clients. “They have taught me so much. I’ve become a better problem solver, more patient, and learned how to express myself more effectively. Learning goes both ways.”

Stephanie also emphasizes how much her team has influenced her positive experience at HIL. “Everyone worked hard to make me feel welcome and supported,” she says. “I love how, in our team meetings, we come together to talk about everything—good or bad—and work together to find solutions. My CSM takes the time to show me things and genuinely wants me to succeed.”

When asked if there’s room for growth within MyPath, Stephanie gave an enthusiastic, “Yes! Because I’ve experienced and seen it!” She wishes more people knew how much opportunity exists for both personal and professional development within the organization.

“Coming to HIL was one of the best decisions of my adult life. The job challenges me, and even when things get tough, we work through it together. I had been looking for a job like this—it feels amazing, comfortable, and safe.”

For Stephanie, her role at MyPath is more than just a job—it’s a career, and that means everything to her. “This role comes with more responsibility, but I love a challenge. I’m proud of myself, my kids are proud of me, and I know I’m making a difference every single day.”

Working at a MyPath Company

Our employees are why MyPath companies work so well for the people we serve. They’re the reason we’re 100% employee-owned and have nine MyPath companies and 150 locations throughout Wisconsin and Indiana. To help take care of the future of our people, employees who are with us for a year, with over 1000 hours of work, begin to receive company-funded MyPath stock shares. After that first year, continued employment with us means continued growth in the number of company shares you receive.

This culture of ownership goes beyond stock. As an employee owner, you can expect transparency, respect and appreciation. If you are called to help others and be part of something bigger, MyPath can help you explore opportunities throughout its many organizations.
